Magazine Cover Illustration

Main & Broad

I was commissioned by Main & Broad Magazine to create a unique papercut illustration for an article spotlighting the vibrant arts scenes in Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs, NC. The goal was to capture the spirit of these towns and their creative communities in a visually compelling piece that complemented the magazine’s storytelling.

The Challenge

  • Representing Two Communities: The artwork needed to highlight the distinct identities of both Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs while unifying them under the shared theme of artistic celebration.

  • Dynamic Composition: The papercut illustration had to convey depth, vibrancy, and movement to engage readers and reflect the richness of the local arts.

  • Time and Precision: Given the intricate nature of papercut art, the project required meticulous planning and execution within tight editorial deadlines.

My Approach

  1. Research and Concept Development:

    • Explored the cultural and artistic landmarks of both towns to identify symbols, themes, and motifs that resonated with their communities.

    • Collaborated with the editorial team to ensure the illustration aligned with the article's tone and focus.

  2. Design and Execution:

    • Sketched initial concepts that integrated iconic local elements, such as public art pieces, performance spaces, and natural surroundings.

    • Created a layered papercut design using bold colors and intricate details to evoke a sense of dimension and vitality.

    • Focused on balancing the elements to equally represent both towns while maintaining visual harmony.

  3. Final Presentation:

    • Delivered a high-resolution digital version of the artwork for publication and a physical papercut piece for potential display.

    • Provided input on how the artwork could be used across digital and print platforms to maximize its impact.

The Impact

  • Community Pride: The illustration celebrated the unique artistic identities of Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs, fostering a sense of pride among residents.

  • Reader Engagement: The vibrant and intricate design drew readers into the article, enhancing their connection to the magazine’s content.

  • Elevated Aesthetic: The papercut art brought a handcrafted, tactile quality to the publication, distinguishing it from typical editorial illustrations.

Conclusion

This project demonstrated how papercut illustration can transcend its medium to tell a deeper story. By combining artistry with research and collaboration, I created a piece that not only highlighted the arts in Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs but also became a lasting visual representation of their creative spirit.
